Esophagitis: An inflammation or irritation in your food pipe (esophagus) can cause pain or discomfort when swallowing. If this persists, or if it doesn't get better after a trial of antacids, see your doctor for evaluation.

Lack of chewing: You mention foods that are inherently pain producing and need to be chewed. The mechanical stiffness of foods like that may " scratch" the mucosal lining and thus produce discomfort.
