Evolving process: Acute myelogenous leukemia arises in bone marrow in which cells bearing mutations gradually overgrow their normal neighbors. As mutant cells acquire new mutations, clones within clones develop. These "somatic mutations" might be considered the beginning of the illness, but when it becomes symptomatic, it's fast.
