Different: Rheumatic fever is a specific disease that is associated with damage to heart valves (usually mitral) that can develop following untreated strep throat. Infectious endocarditis is simply the presence of a vegetation (typically bacteria but can also be fungal) that builds up on any heart valve. In IV drug users for instance, the tricuspid valve is a common site to find vegetatations.
