Blood test: You and your wife can both get blood tests for hsv1 and hsv2. Most people are already infected with hsv1 but only some of them have symptoms. If you are already infected you cannot get it from another person.

Avoidance: the best way to avoid contracting herpes is to avoid contact; however, you may have already contracted it, but never actually broken out; it might be worth getting antibodies to Herpes types 1 & 2 (and also to culture your wife to see what type she has); if yours is +, and the same type as your wife's, you probably have already contracted it (probably from her), and don't have to worry as much
