Systemic side effects are rare. Local problems include, but are not limited to, no effect, infection, discoloration, loss of pigmentation, atrophy and scar widening.

Steroid injections: I have used kenalog (triamcinolone) injections for scar control for several years - you need to be careful about how much steroid your doctor uses in each injection. Steroids like kenalog (triamcinolone) can cause fat atrophy beneath the skin. I generally inject kenalog (triamcinolone) in 10 mg/ml doses directly into scars. Steroid injections will not improve the appearance of widened and stretched scars.

Thinning of skin : Common side effects include pain and injection site irritation. Perhaps the most concerning side effect is thinning of the skin (atrophy) where the steroid is injected. A well-trained facial plastic surgeon will know what strength of steroid to use in order to limit the chances of this from happening.
