Very hot: or very cold (ice) liquids can cause extrasystoles (extra heart beats ...but this should be very transient and certainly not occur at night! Sounds like you need a heart monitor at night and this is available quite commonly in the OFFICES of Cardiologists!!! Ask your PCP for a referral! BTW Most all these "arrythmias" are treatable! Tachycardia : The symptoms you relate suggest a rapid heart beat- there are many different rhythms and causes and you must get checked out by a cardiologist with EKgs and 24 hr holsters and get a thyroid function test to determine cause especially if it repeats. Likely it was a sinus tachycardia but sometimes people can get ventricular tachycardia. Atrial fibrillation is also a possibility.
