Take vitamins: Folic acid is almost always included in prenatal vitamins because most pregnant women don't get enough of it from just what they eat. Taking folic acid for at least one month prior to conception lowers the risk of neural-tube defects, such as spina bifida, significantly. Recommended dose is 400 micrograms of folic acid every day prior to pregnancy and 600 micrograms when pregnant.

Folic acid: There is enough folic acid in prenatal vitamins to protect against birth defects related to low dietary folic acid. You should not need more.
