I started the pill 6 weeks ago (i wasnt using any form of the pill decided to go back on it due to spotting brown discharge) so since going on it i am having brown discharge/brown pink spotting plus mild cramps. how long for this to settle?

Two cycles: This may be your uterine lining, going thru an adjustment in thickness, from the Pill, the lining will thin down over time, and cycle flow should decrease, as well as decreased cramps, one or two more cycles to adjust, if problem continues, let your doctor know.
