what is the best treatment for dry cough in elderly with less side effects and cause no sedation (e.g lozenges) if allergic response is the cause?

The cause: There are many reasons which can cause a dry cough and one really needs to get examined by a doctor to find out. I would usually start by measuring the lung function to find out whether a patient has asthma then go from there.
