Might be shingles: If it just started recently, it could be shingles. The pain can precede the rash by a day or two. Look for a rash in the area that is tender. If it has been going on for a long time, then you may need to see your doctor. You first have to determine whether the source of pain is at the surface, in the bones, or (less likely) deeper in the chest cavity.
