Several: There are several types of heart defects, but doctors usually classify them into several broad categories. Cyanotic defects cause your baby to turn cyanotic, or blue. Obstructive defects block the normal flow of blood through the heart and its associated blood vessels. Septal defects cause "holes" between the heart's chambers. And hypoplastic defects make one side of the heart smaller.

How do doctors manage kidney infections in pregnancy?

Antibiotics(Abx): Kidney infections are a serious condition when pregnant. While simple bladder infections can be treated with oral abx as outpatient, kidney infections usually require IV abx and a hospital stay. Daily, preventative abx are then prescribed for the remainder of pregnancy. Call your doctor quickly if symptoms of a bladder infection develop to prevent progression to a kidney infection.

Usually waiting: If there is no obstruction or infection, most urologists will not treat stones in pregnancy unless the pain becomes unbearable. Even then, they will often just pass a stent (thin tube) up into your kidney to make sure it keeps draining until after delivery. Drinking lots of water and pain meds are the usual course in pregnancy.

What problems does diabetic kidney disease cause?

LowProtein/HighWaste: Protein loss into the urine can cause low protein levels in the blood, and lead to swelling in the feet and ankles late in the day, and around the face in the morning. High levels of waste products and potassium and low levels of calcium can cause fatigue, weakness, heart problems, bone problems, and sudden death. Dialysis is needed to correct these imbalances.

None: Diabetes can hurt the kidneys and not be detectable on urine or blood test. In fact, studies have been done on diabetes patients who have normal kidney test, yet biopsies of these patients show damage. Diabetic retinopathy correlates with diabetic nephropathy. Studies have shown ace inhibitors to be protective of kidneys on both normotensive and hypertensive patients.
