Yes and yes: Without an outbreak, the chance of transmission is low by kissing and the virus is never transmitted by towels. Based on this and other questions, you are far more worried than necessary. This isn't a big deal! Half of all people get oral herpes, and it could happen to your kids. But that's most likely from other children (e.g. in day care, school, etc) and not from your infection.
