NORMAL: Sounds like he is starting puberty, which is completelly normal for his age. He should soon (next few months) also start having body odor (underarms) and voice change.

Precocious Puberty: Early development of facial and axillary hair may result from natural early maturation based on family heritage, or it may imply a diagnosis of “precocious puberty” which involves a spectrum of hormone irregularities. Please make an appointment with your child’s primary care provider for evaluation, which will include a complete history and physical examination, x-rays and lab work.

See your doctor: You should take him to see your doctor so they can determine whether he is developing on schedule or needs an evaluation for precocious puberty.

Mostly normal: Most boys have adrenarche around 9-10 years , which means adrenal glands starts to produce more of its sex steroid hormones. These hormones cause underarm odor/hair, pubic/facial hair and acne. Some boys may also start puberty around 11 and so their testosterone can also contribute to more hair.

See doctor: Course facial hair is not typically seen in boys this young. It isn't unusual to see underarm hair, however. Your son's pcp should see your son to determine if he might need to be evaluated by a pediatric endcocrinologist for rapid pubertal development.

May be normal: Boys are entitled to start pubertal development by age 9 years- old. Most 10-11 year-olds still usually don't have a significant amount of coarse facial hair even if pubertal onset is normal. Axillary hair is ok. Please take your son to see his pediatrician if you have concerns.
