Allergy/irritant: Two possibilities come to mind: (a) soap or detergent got trapped in the ring causing the irritation (b) you have become allergic to the metal in the ring. Stop wearing your ring for a week to see if this helps. The next step would be finding out whether it's the detergent (take ring off when washing) or the ring metal. See allergist/derm to detect which metal you are allergic to for the latter.
