A member asked:

Patient in a coma, when eyelids are opened the eyeballs are looking upward. explanation please. ?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

This is a reflex.: It indicates that the circuits that control eye movement and protective reflexes may be working. For example, you can be totally unconscious but still blink your eyes if something touches your cornea. It says very little one way or another about the conscious, thinking, feeling and movement parts of the brain. It's one small part of the picture determining the prognosis of a comatose person.
