Many cannot be seen: Often to see a fracture on a regular x ray (plain film) the x-ray beam must shine through rather than across a fracture line. It helps if the bones are shifted (displaced). Some fractures are due to compression and are harder to see. Some fractures through growth plates are hard to see. "Bone bruise", a fracture of tiny parts of bone (spicules), can be seen on MRI but often not on plain film.
