Meaning...: The term coughing up blood means that there is blood in the phlegm that is coughed up from the airways. The medical term for this is hemoptysis. The most common cause for this is bronchitis but there are many other causes including lung cancer. This symptom is serious and should always be evaluated by a doctor. Hope this helps!
