Nail injury: It depends upon the severity of the damage. If there is a simple contusion, apply cold compresses for 2 days and then switch to heat. If there is severe throbbing because of blood under the nail, the emergency room physician will drill a hole to remove it. Also go to the emergency room if the nail is torn or hanging off,or if the finger is swollen or very reddened.
