Other causes: Low-grade fever can be culture-negative endocarditis, TB, familial mediterranean fever, malaria, some medication, Hodgkin's / non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, rheumatoid arthritis, and a few others. The workup needs to go beyond culturing stuff, which isn't likely to be productive if things are originally negative. Remember that typhoid and brucella cultures often are false-negatives.
