See below: There are two muscles that make up the "calf" muscle- the gastrocnemius and the soleus. Saying they are torn implies that they have been injured to the extent that all or part of the muscle is in discontinuity. Most can be managed non surgically. If there is an associated complete tear of the Achilles' tendon, surgery becomes a consideration.
