Pertussis is: whooping cough. It causes a classic whooping sound in an infant with it and can be quite serious in that age group. It is caused by a bacteria and is treatable. In an older child or adult, it can cause a long-lasting cough. Children and adults are vaccinated against this disease with a DTap (young children) series, and when an adolescent/adult a Tdap vaccine.
