Long history of very heavy drinking. ultrasound 16 mnth ago showed fatty liver all else norm. been abstinent 5 months. is cirrhosis unlikely? thanks.

Yes, unlikely: an ultrasound can generally distinguish between fatty liver and the presence of denser tissue, like fibrosis and scarring (which are found in cirrhosis). If you stopped drinking, it should return to normal, and congratulations! Your doctor can follow up, generally with blood tests (or maybe another ultrasound) to determine whether things have gotten back to normal. Keep staying away from alcohol

Cannot say.: To diagnose cirrhosis, u need a liver biopsy. While newer blood tests & Radiology tests (like MRI vibro-elastography) purport to accurately predict cirrhosis, most physicians would not look upon these results as conclusive - only the biopsy would confirm & stage the degree of cirrhosis.
