Statin long term: The most common side effects of statin drugs are muscle pain, cramps and weakness. Liver enzymes can be mildly elevated. Rare serious side effects include rhabdomyolysis, release of too much muscle breakdown products in the blood, causing renal failure, particularly when combined with other drugs which increase the risk. In the long term, the risk of nerve damage (polyneuropathy) is possible.
