Ejection fraction: The left ventricle exists to pump blood throughout the body. During each heartbeat, the ventricle pumps a certain fraction of the blood it receives. A well preserved function means that the ventricle is maintaining its ability to pump blood efficiently throughout the cardiovascular system. During heart failure, the ventricle typically loses this ability.
