Not normal: If your periods are so heavy that you need a blood transfusion then this is not normal. You need to see an Obgyn. A full exam and sonogram should be done. A sonohystogram or diagnostic hysteroscopy can be done to look for polyps or submucosal fibroids. Blood testing for von willebrands disease could be considered. A mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD often solves the problem in young women.
