Mental Health and: obtaining a research degree. Please think about the impact of such a degree on your mental status. If it is helpful then consider continuing, if it makes symptoms worse than change paths. Many people draw good from their suffering and help others. Perhaps this will be your case. Keep in touch w/your doc/therapist for accountability and feedback. Peace and good health.

Discuss w therapist: Why not ? Many people with mental illness have gone on to do research and make important contributions to society. You should be sure that you condition is stabilized and probably should discuss your pending plans with your therapist.
