Yes: Vaginal bleeding affects 25% of all women during the first half of pregnancy and is a common reason for first-trimester ultrasound. Examples of causes besides a miscarriage are subchorionic hemorrhage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, sexual trauma, infection, etc. Some causes are potentially serious so its best to see an Ob and find out what is going on. Best wishes!

Ominous: Unfortunately, bleeding in early pregnancy that intensifies beyond mild spotting is an ominous sign for an impending miscarriage. However, it can also be a sign for a "vanishing" twin, i.e. the miscarriage of one twin with the other one surviving and making it to term. A transvaginal ultrasound at 6 - 7 weeks should show a measurable embryo with heart beat.
