Doctor can evaluate: Dark patches are hard to describe in words. A doctor's exam can help decide what spots on the chest and back might be. Spots can be "post-inflammatory", the residual effects of an earlier rash. Spots can be skin reactions with chemicals, leaving colored stains. They can be eczema (sensitive, dry skin), fungal infections (tinea versicolor), psoriasis (autoimmune disorder), pityriasis rosea, etc...
