Pleurisy: About a half of patients diagnosed with lupus experience some form of lung involvement. Pleuritis or pleurisy, is inflammation of the pleura, a two-layered membrane surrounding the lungs. This can cause shooting upper back pain with deep inspiration. Other conditions such as pleural effusion are possible. A chest x-ray would be helpful. Nsaids and anti-malarials such as Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) can help.
