Can be normal: There is a certain amount of variation in the period - coming early or late, change in amount or color - that is normal. So if timing is off it can be due to stress or eating too much soy. However if the person is experiencing unusual pain or fever or just got a new partner then spotting can be caused by an infection, and she might want to get checked.
