A member asked:

How soon does the depo shot work if it isn't given while on your period ?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Quite soon: The injection of 250 mg of depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate usually blocks ovulation immediately when given during menstruation and this way prevents most pregnancies (91 to 96% effective). Its effectiveness is theoretically reduced if it is given after ovulation has already occurred but it becomes rapidly quite effective .
