Consider endoscopy: GERD in some may result in damage to your esophagus ("esophagitis"). Esophagitis when inadequately treated can progress from a red, irritated esophagus, to one that develops erosions or ulcers, to one that becomes narrowed by scar tissue, or develops pre-cancerous cells (barrett's esophagus). Endoscopy may help reassure you, & importantly can rule out eosinophilic esophagitis (EE) in your case.

Yes, safe to eat.: To gain your confidence, start with liquids and progress to soft foods such as applesauce and soups. scrambled eggs, etc. If no problems, proceed from there. If this is first episode, you may have taken a big bite and all may be normal. You report a history of GERD. There may be inflammation of your esophagus, so it is wise to see a gastroenterologist who may recommend endoscopy to evaluate that.
