Yes: Retinal holes can be detected during a dilated retinal exam. Retinal holes can be asymptomatic initially, however, they can lead to a retinal detachment. Some patients experience flashing lights and new floaters.

Yes: A small retinal hole can be seen by an ophthalmologist once the pupil has been dilated. Most retinal holes are asymptomatic and do not have to be treated. Certainly anyone with a retinal hole needs to be checked on a regular basis.
