Edema: Feet swelling after prolonged sitting may be due to weak vein valves in the legs and/or abnormal fluid retention that can occur around a woman's period. Other causes are vasodilating medications and more serious conditions such as diseases of the heart, kidneys, liver, low serum albumin, or tumors within the abdomen or pelvis. If significant edema continues a medical assessment would be needed.
