Bruise: A bruise happens when there is trauma to an area underneath which lies a vein. Another way of looking at it... the vein leaks under the skin. If there is a big leak or fast leak, it may feel like burning or itching or throbbing. I've had that happen when I bump my knee really hard or I bump the back of my hand where there are a lot of veins. It should go away in a few days.

Arthritis of the kne: This sounds like knee arthritis. The bruise can suggest trauma which might be the cause of the swelling. You can ask your physician to evalaute you and if necessary see a rheumatologist.
