A member asked:

Can you tell the difference between a herpes rash and a shingles rash by looking at it? it's on my outer right thigh and i have a lot of soreness

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Location: Dear WDyer, both can look similar, actually. Shingles tends to happen on the skin versus herpes, tends to happen in the border of soft skin and regular skin (like the lips or the genitals). Shingles tends to be extremely painful, but severity can vary. Outer right location suggest more Shingles. I would suggest a formal consult to confirm or to visit your doctor.
