Pushing too hard...: The skin turning red is a sure sign of an inflammatory process is happening. Standing for hours at a time does not usually cause a reddish patch to appear. Your comment on how your other foot may be resting on the shin, does sound reasonable. Just before normal tissue starts to break down from too much pressure, it turns red. Failure to stop the pressure could cause the red skin to ulcerate.
