Varies : Osteophytes are bone spurs that develop in the spine usually as a result of degenerative or inflammatory changes. We don't clearly know interventions that can prevent them. At 22, if you have significant bone spurs you might consider seeing a rheumatologist to be screened for a number of systemic arthritic conditions that may be treatable, which then may in turn limit the growth of them.
