Clots? Infection?: Severe pain like this that starts during a period can be an infection in the uterus and tubes. Infections flare during a period because blood is a perfect growth substrate for bacteria. Its actually what is used in the lab to grow bacteria. Large clots coming through the cervix can also cause labor like pain. If this degree of period pain isn't common for you and its persistent, see an Ob/Gyn.
