Get a pap smear: American college of obstetrics and gynecology recommends first pap smear at age 21 (if sexually active), or 2 years after becoming sexually active, whichever comes first. I've seen plenty of 18 year old girls with cancer or precancer.

Now is good: Most offices start checking with onset of sexual activity so you can be checked for STDs which can affect fertility. Definitely get screened at 21 if you're sexually active. Once you've been screened with normal smears & (-)hpv tests; then your doc can help you decide how often to be checked. I do have pts who need treatment for high-grade pap smears in their teens. Call again or switch offices.

Regional issue: In the US we recommend this soon after the initiation of sexual activity because the germs associated with cervical cancer are passed that way.In Ireland, I suppose the medical powers that be may look at it from a cost benefit basis rather than a consumer benefit basis. I think you are smart to start and should push until you find someone that will do it for you.
