Likely back problem: Could be two problems. Hernias don't cause back pain. Although back pain could radiate around to the lateral hip and possibly into the front of you hip. You should also think about the hip as a source of pain given your age. Try laying down on your back, flex up you hip and then rotate it. If there is pain or limited motion compared to the other side then it might be hip. See an orthopaedist.

Could be the back: Pain starting at the back and radiating sounds like a pinched nerve from the spine. Could be disc disease. See you doctor to find out if you need an MRI if its bad enough.
