Latex condoms: do protect. No,there is no way to tell if a man has genital herpes when he is in remission by visual inspection.

Misinformation: As in my previous reply, there is no way to know by looking. You can ask, but many people have herpes without knowing it. Blood test can tell if someone has HSV1 and/or HSV2. You misunderstand condoms. Recent research shows condoms are over 90% effective in preventing HSV2 transmission from male to female (but only 50% female to male). Large majority of Australian males don't have it anyway.
