Amniocentesis: The procedure to do DNA testing during pregnancy is called an amniocentesis. A needle is placed through the skin into the uterus where amniotic fluid can be sampled. This is a safe procedure but not risk free. It is typically reserved for suspected genetic abnormalities. It is not typically done for paternity testing.
