Depends: Your ex's recovery depends on what made his lung to collapse in the first place. If no reason is known, likely to recover but may be at risk of repeat episode. If the collapse is due to other disease, his recovery depends on that disease.

Chest Tube: It sounds like he had a chest tube placed; this is a tube which is connected to a machine that actively suctions air OUT of the chest so that the lungs can expand every time he expands his chest. When your lungs collapse, it is due to extra air inside the chest that pushes on the lungs and prevents them from expanding; the tube removes that air.
