Not necessarily : If obtaining medications from one doctor for an indicated medical condition and using it as directed, an individual is not considered an addict. Most probably developed physical dependance after 9 years of using opioid medications. If no longer needed, then yes, your doctor is right about detox.

Not addiction: The definition of addiction and tolerance is different. If you taking Percocet 10/325 every 6 hours for the pain with true indication, then you can develope tolerance to the medication after 9 year, not addiction. If you taking a lot of pill of Percocet to get "high" without true indication, then you got addiction problem.
