N. fowleri: N. fowleri can cause amebic meningoencephalitis. Transmission to humans occurs primarily through inhalation of infested water. Activities that increase contact of the nasal mucosa with infested water predispose humans to infection. Tap water exposures with nasal irrigation have been described.
