Under disinfected: Sometimes the level of disinfectant decreases due to pipes on land and warmer conditions and then Naegleria can survive but you cannot be infected with Naegleria fowleri by drinking contaminated water. Water utilities can have the disinfectant raised but it may cause a strong chemical taste or smell.

Chloramine/ chlorine: kills N. fowleri. Evidently some water testing by CDC showed low residual levels of chlorine. This resulted in water lines being flushed with additional chlorine. For a good explanation see: http://www.dhh.louisiana.gov/index.cfm/newsroom/detail/2865
