Muscle strain: Shooting pain in the back right side below the rib cage can be a muscle strain, costochondritis, pleuritis (if present on deep breath), kidney stone, ureteral stone. If you have severe pain, pain getting worse, significant fever, blood in urine, increasing cough or coughing up blood or mucous, see MD now. Ice pack to area for 15 minutes several times daily--see if that helps. If not, see MD.

?neuralgia: Might be an intercostal neuralgia, but could represent an episode of shingles especially if local rash in area. Be vigilant and check, and if so, have your doctor treat. Possible small rib fracture could be considered.
