Single vs cluster: Usually an ingrown hair is an isolated occurrence, while most often, herpes produces several vesicles. The appearance of the lesions also sometimes can help as herpes are tiny blister-like bubbles full of clear-yellow fluid with redness around them. Ingrown hair often has pus (and hair) inside it, also with redness around it.
