Could certainly be: the flu, or another virus. I would recommend you call his pediatrician and have him seen. Meanwhile make sure he's drinking plenty of fluids and if he has no medical contraindication, you can give him Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin or Advil for the fever, if he's uncomfortable.
